The trans-Kalahari motorway is now finished. Going from Ghanzi to Gaborone takes six hours.

There are now two buses running everyday from Ghanzi to Gaborone: the first leaves at 7am sharp; the second at 10am. Both buses are safe and comfortable. The fare is P48.

The road from Maun to Ghanzi is still very rough gravel – we had a puncture by the time we hit Ghanzi. I think a high clearance 4WD is better for this road; we drove a 2WD VW and felt the rocks underneath us at times.

I have learned some new lessons on this trip and have been reminded of some old ones. Among them, I had to remember that you have to open up to a culture before it will fully open up to you. In other words, you can pass through simply as an observer, or you can have the rarer gift of making some friends along the way. This is hard to remember, as it was for me, when the culture seems to accost you at every turn. This lesson was, however, drilled home one day when we were in the market doing some last minute Christmas shopping before heading to Europe. Read the rest of this entry »
