On Mount Mulanje there is a small missonary hut which you can stay at cheaply, but you will need to bring all your own equipment. There is a guard there looking after the place who provides fuel and wood. This is a very basic place but it is cosy and has a fantastic location. Change money in The Gambia rather than the UK as you get a better rate – about 17.8D to the pound in the supermarkets, or 18D on the black market. No commission with either.

If you want to avoid The Gambia’s equivalent of Majorca, avoid the Senegambia area of the coast. Nightmarish now. Cape Point seems to be the only “real” place left – even Sunwing now plays Spice Girls and does all inclusive holidays. Read the rest of this entry »

Tourist visa extensions are now R150. They take 21 days to process, and you are allowed to stay in the country whilst they do so. It might be a good idea to collect the extension in the same city that you apply for it; I spent quite some extra time at the Department of Home Affairs in Pretoria because someone in Cape Town forgot to send a fax stating that my extension had been approved.
